MANLEY SLAM!® MASTERING VERSION
Manley Labs proudly introduces the Mastering Version of the SLAM!, tailored specifically for mastering engineers who demand precision, control, and uncompromising sonic excellence in their workflow. This specialized version eliminates the microphone preamps and introduces enhancements to the ELOP and FET limiters, providing mastering engineers with a dedicated tool for shaping and refining stereo tracks.
Key Features and Enhancements
- Mic Preamp Removal:
- The mastering version eliminates the microphone preamps, focusing solely on the ELOP and FET limiters for mastering applications.
- Dedicated Mode Switches:
- The mode switches on the mastering version become dedicated to the ELOP and FET limiters, offering precise control over each limiter's behavior.
- Enhanced ELOP Limiter Ratios:
- The ELOP limiter in the mastering version features additional ratios: 10:1, 5:1, 3:1, 2:1, and a new mode called AutoHF. AutoHF starts with a 1.5:1 ratio and gradually increases to 10:1 for high frequencies, functioning similarly to a de-esser. The ELOP SC toggle at 200Hz can be engaged for added effect.
- New FET Limiter Modes:
- The FET limiters in the mastering version introduce new modes: 50%, NORM, LP Lim, BOTH, and CLIP.
- The "50%" setting mixes in the straight signal to the limited signal, providing a cleaner sound while doubling the amount of gain reduction.
- The "LP Lim" setting reduces the depth of gain reduction for high frequencies in hot signals, resulting in a brighter, more present signal with less distortion.
- The "CLIP" setting introduces a fixed threshold clipper circuit, preventing outputs from exceeding +18 dBv in a controlled fast-recovery manner.
- The "BOTH" setting engages both the "LP Limit" and "CLIP" functions simultaneously, suitable for extreme processing and loudness while preserving attack, brightness, and aggressiveness.
- Master Stereo Bypass:
- The left blue "Limit" button becomes a master stereo bypass switch in the mastering version. When disengaged, it functions as a true hard-wire bypass.
- Limiter Bypass:
- The right bypass button becomes the limiter bypass, allowing the tubes and transformers to remain active while bypassing the limiter section.
- Input Select Toggle:
- The Phantom toggle on the back of the unit becomes the Unbalanced 1/4" jack input select in the mastering version.
- Detented Switches:
- In the mastering version, all knobs are replaced with discrete detented switches, providing precise and repeatable control in 1 dB steps, with some 1/2 dB and 2 dB steps where appropriate.
The SLAM! Mastering Version is designed to offer mastering engineers a refined and efficient tool for enhancing stereo tracks. With dedicated controls, enhanced ratio options, and thoughtful features, this version of the SLAM! caters to the specific needs of mastering studios, ensuring a straightforward and effective mastering process.
