MOJAVE MA-37
Introducing the Mojave MA-37 - A Modern Take on the Classic Sony C-37a
Experience the perfect blend of retro and futuristic with the Mojave MA-37, a creation by Technical Grammy Award Winner David Royer. This microphone pays homage to the legendary Sony C-37a, renowned for its remarkable headroom and ability to tame harsh high frequencies. Back in the 1960s, during the golden age of Hollywood recording, the C-37a found fame as a workhorse, embraced by the iconic 'Wrecking Crew' era. Studios like Capitol Records and Sunset Sound acquired multiple units, many of which are still in use today. From legendary figures like Leonard Bernstein and voice-over icon Mel Blanc (the voice behind over 400 characters, from Bugs Bunny to Barney Rubble), to renowned producer Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel), and modern artists like Bon Iver, the C-37a has remained a cherished 'secret weapon' microphone among the cognoscenti.
David Royer, a long-time admirer of the C-37a, has finally realized his dream of presenting an updated version to the Mojave family. As he explains, "Sony took a completely different approach than Neumann and AKG, which made the C-37a a completely different animal."
The Mojave MA-37 is equipped with an EF86 tube, a Lundahl transformer, and a custom capsule crafted right here in California. It features a distinctive mechanical approach, originally developed by RCA in the 1930s and later embraced by Sony. This unique approach allows users to select between cardioid and omnidirectional polar patterns via an adjustable tuned acoustic chamber.
Staying true to David Royer's 'simple yet elegant' design philosophy, the circuit is centered around a single-stage tube amplifier. The hi-pass filter controls are conveniently located on the power supply, providing three options: flat (M), 100Hz (V1), and 200Hz (V2).
The Mojave MA-37 offers a distinctive sound that's both classic and modern, creating a unique audio experience.
