In 1997, Purple Audio began producing the MC76, a compressor inspired by the D & E version units of the iconic 1176. The "MC" in the name reflects the Roman numeral 1100, paying homage to the 1176 model. During this time, the original 1176 units were not readily available from manufacturers, prompting Purple Audio to craft a better-built, roadworthy alternative that could be sold at a more affordable price compared to vintage units.
Evolution to MC77: Following the introduction of the MC76, another manufacturer introduced an 1176 clone to the market. In response, Purple Audio unveiled the MC77, building upon the MC76 and adding new features that addressed certain limitations of the original 1176. The MC77 quickly gained popularity, and Purple Audio's commitment to high-quality parts and construction has kept it in demand for thousands of units.
Durability and Roadworthiness: Purple Audio aimed to create a compressor that was not only sonically superior but also more durable and suitable for road use. This led to the design and production of the MC76 and later the MC77.
Quality Build: Purple Audio places a strong emphasis on build quality, using components that are selected for their durability, ensuring the units last for decades.
Toroidal Power Transformer: The inclusion of a toroidal power transformer contributes to the unit's reliability and stable power supply.
Interlocking Switches: Purple Audio uses what is described as "the best interlocking switches on the market," emphasizing the importance of reliable and robust components in their designs.
Conductive Plastic Potentiometers: The use of conductive plastic potentiometers enhances the longevity and reliability of these critical components.
Parts for Longevity: Purple Audio prioritizes the selection of parts that are built to last, promoting longevity and sustainability in their products.
MC77 Enhancements: The MC77 introduces new features that were not present in the original 1176, addressing the evolving needs of audio professionals.
Continued Commitment: Purple Audio continues to maintain high standards in parts selection and build quality to ensure their compressors meet the demands of the audio industry.
Enduring Popularity: The MC76 and MC77 have remained popular choices for audio professionals, with their combination of classic analog sound and modern reliability.
